So last summer I (Jessica) drafted a super simple, super easy pattern for a dress last summer and sewed three of them. It was supposed to be a blog post, but by the time I got around to creating the tutorial it was already fall, and this dress as well as the tutorial weren't so fall appropriate.
One of the three dresses I made was this one below, from (of all things) a vintage bed sheet. I loved the ocean scene as a pattern, and the sheet was super soft. It made a gorgeous dress! So gorgeous in fact, that my good friend Suzzy saw it and went absolutely nuts for it. She is obsessed with the ocean and the color aqua, and dresses. So when she saw a picture of this dress she very gently hinted that she would be willing to take it off my hands for me. With force, if necessary.
Of course I agreed to let her have it! And today I thought it would be fun to show you all how we both styled this one summery dress, two different ways. And stay tuned, because I'll be posting the tutorial for making your own very soon as well!
The pictures below are of me from last summer:
Since I own absolutely nothing aqua colored, I played up the yellow in the sun with a thin yellow belt and yellow wedge sandals, and added a nude beaded necklace. Oh yes, and a tan. I'm a minimalist.
Below is the lovely Suzzy (you've probably seen her before, she also modeled for our headwrap crochet pattern). You may have heard me mention her a time or two, it's her adorable baby girl who modeled for our newborn crown crochet pattern, and our baby gown from adult tee tutorial.
She was much more comprehensive then I was with her accessory choices, probably because half her wardrobe is aqua colored items. No joke. She even had beaded aqua colored flip flops that perfectly matched the dress, and a pair of sand-colored starfish shaped earrings made of abalone.
She also wore a cute beaded bracelet, and added this vintage crocheted bag. The bag was actually also from me, it was her birthday present! I saw it at thrift and knew she'd love it. And it just practically begged to be paired with this dress!
A huge thank you to Suzzy for being willing to model for me! I love featuring other people's outfits, and I especially love it when I can show you all how we style DIY items. Keep your eyes peeled for the tutorial on making this dress, and if you're looking for more sewing projects to keep you busy in the meantime, you can check those out on our sewing page!

I'm looking forward to the tutorial, this looks like a kind of dress I will need several of! I love the idea of a dress from a bed sheet, new fabric can be so expensive so a bit of re purposing is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThanks Julia! Bedsheets have been my go-to fabric source for a long time. A lot of time its high quality cotton, cute prints or solid colors, and you get yards and yards of fabric for a tiny fraction of the cost! Even if you buy new bedsheets you can get them places like Ross and T.J. Maxx for under $10.
DeleteThat's brilliant! I'm going to have to go check out Ross and T.J. Maxx, gotta make some summer dresses!
DeleteI love this dress! It would be a dress that I would wear all the time.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks again for joining the Link Up this week!
I adore the dress! That sounds like me doing something for a season, but it's too late to do anything with it because the season is over! :D Some of those vintage sheets are just so dang soft...I miss those!
ReplyDeleteYou made this!?! OMG - I'm amazed!

ReplyDeleteI think I'll be hanging out for the tutorial! Love the dress paired with the yellow belt. I'm going into Autumn here - but hey, they can always be sewn up in advance - Spring here is a busy time! :)
