leather tassel tutorial

diy how to make a leather tassel tutorial

I'm so excited! Today I (Jessica) am going to show you what I did with the left over pieces of red suede from that leather skirt I refashioned into a clutch style purse! This time I made an accessory to add onto my new bag, because it was looking a little plain (despite the bright flashy red color). I had some small pieces of leather left over, and so I whipped up this fun leather tassel, and wrote you all a tutorial for how to make your own!

Isn't it cute? I love how it adds just a little extra texture and detail to an otherwise plain bag.

Are the pictures convincing you to make one of your own yet? Good! Here we go:

Here's what you'll need to make you own:

1. A rectangular piece of leather, whatever size you like. Mine was about 7 inches x 5 inches. You can also use fake leather from the fabric store. I really think a metallic vinyl version would be fun.
2. A short strip of leather, about 1/4 inch x 3 inches.
3. A key ring.
4. Super glue, or Gorilla glue. There are glues specific to leather, but I didn't use that and it was just fine.
5. Clamps. These are from the Dollar Tree, and were about 10 for $1.
6. Scissors. No sewing on this project!
*optional* a strip of leather about 1/4 inch x 8 inches long, to wrap the tassel in at the end.

1. Lay out your leather and make sure it's as close to a perfect rectangle as you can get.
2. Take your 1/4 x 3 inch strip, and thread it through your key ring.
3. Using a q-tip, put a tiny glob of glue on on side of your strip as shown.
4. Use one of your clamps, clamp your pieces of leather

5. Lay our your rectangle vertically. Draw a line across the leather, about 2 inches from the top as shown. Using your scissors, you'll cut strips all the way up to your line.
6. Cut strips of the same size all the across
7. Take another glob of glue and glue your key ring's leather strip to the upper left hand of your leather triangle.
8. Roll your leather key ring strip up , making sure the top stays even. When you get to the end, do another glob of glue along the end, then finish rolling it up.

9. Clamp your tassel together, and let it dry completely.
10. *optional* if you'd like, you could leave your tassel as is. But it makes for a much cleaner and prettier result if you wrap it. Cut a long strip of leather about 1/4 inch x 8 inches, and wrap it several times around the top of your tassel as shown.
11. On the front of the tassel, knot your long leather strip. Now you're done!

If you're looking for a cute and fast DIY gift for someone in your life, this is it! The finished product is super impressive and luxe but it doesn't cost much and takes almost no time. You could whip up a ton of these thing pretty quickly and have them on hand. You could even do a version for a men's key chain tassel using a rich brown or black leather, and it would be gorgeous for one of the men on your list.
