It's that time of year again! Time for boots, scarves, hats...time for us to start crocheting again! Yay! Today we're starting with that must-have fall and winter accessory: cute boot cuffs!
Last year we published several free crochet patterns, and you (our lovely readers) seemed to love them! We got a lot of feedback on our Lacey Scarf crochet pattern, and our original Boot Cuff crochet pattern, and we couldn't wait this year to start sharing some more crochet projects with you!
We've been planning some new awesome crochet projects over the next few months for fall/winter 2013, and to kick us off today I (Jessica) am going to share my pattern for these Lacy Scalloped Boot Cuffs with you all! This is a quick and pretty simple project, and doesn't even use up a whole skein of yarn. The perfect project to get back in the crocheting game for cold weather! Check it out after the break:
And aren't they adorable? Check out how cute they are with my riding boots and jeans:
Want to make your own? I've got the free pattern below.
Lacy Scalloped Boot Cuff Crochet Pattern
Skill level: Beginner/Moderately experienced
Key:
Sc: Single Crochet
St: St
Sl st: Slip Stitch
Dc: Double Crochet
Ch: Chain (stitch)
V: V-stitch
You'll Need:
A worsted weight yarn (I used a locally made wool, but a similar weight would be Vanna's Choice from Lion Brand Yarn)
H hook
Bring your chain around into a circle, being careful not to twist it. Sl st into your first st to form a circle.
Rows 2-5: *Sc in the first st, then continue around until the end of the row, then sl st into your ch 1 to join (here and for the rest of the pattern you will do this when using sc), then ch 1* repeat pattern between the ** 4 times for 4 rows of sc
Row 6: ch 3 (this acts as 1 dc + ch 1, here and for the rest of the rows using a v-stitch), then dc into the base of your chain, the same st as your join from the last row of sc. Skip 2 st then (so 3ed st from hook) *dc, ch 1, dc in the same stitch.* Continue around repeating the st between the ** until you have completed a row, then sl st into the top of your initial ch 3 (this is the foundation row for your V stitches. If you're a visual person and want to watch a video on how to do a V-stitch, you can check a good V stitch tutorial.)
Rows 7-11: *Ch 3, then dc into your join from the previous row. Dc, ch 1, dc into the space between your first V stitches from the foundation row. Continue until you have completed the row, then sl st into the top of your ch 3.* Repeat between ** for 6 total rows of V stitches.
Row 12: Sc into your join from the previous row. Sc in each st around. For every V you should have 3 sc stitches, but be careful not to sc into the space between them as you did before! Make sure you tease out each individual st, it may be kind of tough. But (hopefully!) you should still have the same # of st as your foundation chain.
row 13-14: *Ch 1, sc around. Sl st into your ch 1 to join and the end of the row* (a total of 3 sc rows forms the base of the scallops, add more if you like the look of more!)
row 15: Sc into your join. *skip 2 sc st, 5 dc in next sc st, skip 2 sc st ch, 1 sc in next ch * repeat all the way around, and sl st to end the row. (this is a scalloped edge stitch. I really like this tutorial for a scalloped edge) Your scallops will be uneven, don't worry too much about it. As much as I've tried I can't seem to get them even! If anyone has any advice about this I'd love to hear it!
***Edited 12/5/2013 to add: My original version of this pattern was A MESS! Sorry guys! The lovely Justine from Crochet from J did a beautiful job of clarifying some of my instructions. You should check out her blog as well, the girl is talented and gorgeous, and has tons of her own amazing crochet patterns.***
Weave in ends, and you're done! Aren't they adorable? I am already working on a more intermediate crochet version
If you make your own boot cuffs from our pattern, we'd love to see them! Let us know how they turn out, and if you're looking for other cute crochet projects, you can check out our crochet page with all our patterns from last fall and winter. Happy crocheting!
~Jessica
What?! You crochet too? Wow!!!! Cute little boot cuffs! Sometimes I use sweater sleeves:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Amy! I actually posted a sweater sleeve version last winter as well, but that tutorial tends to get lost (and the pics are BAD, which is kind of embaressing now!) because it's so old. I'm glad you like them! Crocheting is something Hil and I picked up last winter, and we're "hooked!" Ha! Did you catch that clever pun?
DeleteSo cute! I love these on people! Unfortunately, I am in the group of women who can't stuff their big calves into a pair of boots, and if I did find some these adorable cuffs would just attract to the stuffed sausages. Someday! It's a goal... Because they are adorable!
ReplyDeleteI really love this!! Fabulous!

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to make these! Thanks for the tutorial!!
ReplyDeleteLovely! I bet these go together super fast!
ReplyDeleteDarn it! I can't sew or croquet ANYTHING, but I want those! They are so stylish and pretty. What a nice way to accessorize boots.

Hope to see you on my blog:)
Those are so adorable! Thank you so much for sharing!

can't wait to bust out a bunch of these for christmas gifts! love it
ReplyDeleteMade these last night. Although it is a really easy pattern and works up quickly, the picture does not match the pattern as written. I was able to adapt it to fit (after a few attempts) but beginners may not. The pattern (as written) will fit someone who has very skinny calves or middle school child. Remember to increase pattern by 3s.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for letting me know, I'm not sure what happened! I can assure you I don't have skinny calves (I wish!) so maybe it's in the stitch width? I did crochet very loosely when I did the foundation row, and I wanted them to be slightly tight so that they didn't fall down or move around. I will add this to the pattern, thank you again!
DeleteI double checked my hook size as well, because I was thinking that maybe I wrote that down wrong, but I didn't. I will also add that if you're having fit issues you can go up to an I hook and see if you get a bigger stitch that way.
Deleteaccording to the pattern each shell covers 6 stitches-the picture shows 9 shells in each cuff- that means 54 stitches in the base chain not 30
DeleteLove these! I'm going to have to see if I can pursued my mom to make me some, since I can't crochet!
ReplyDeleteThis is the cutest idea. I love it. Thanks so much for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteI love these, they are really cute, might just have to start crocheting again ~ Lisa
ReplyDeleteI had to do 60 beginning chains O.o. I'm an average person, ( i think ) but maybe I'm using the wrong yarn? Anyway my 60 worked fine and they look beautiful! I can't wait to wear them this weekend on my trip to SF. Thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteLadies! Love these! Might get me to pick up my crochet hook again! I'll be featuring these on my blog on Saturday.

I had been looking for a boot cuff pattern and even started and frogged several starts because I didn't like how they were coming along. I found your pattern on Ravelry and knew it was the right one! The directions do take a bit of interpreting, especially with the v-stich steps but I was able to work it out. I had to add more stitches around but I do crochet tightly. They worked up quickly and were the perfect look. Thanks for posting your pattern!
ReplyDeleteThank you Robyn! I spent an hour this morning editing my pattern. I don't know what was up when I wrote it the first time...apparently I needed more coffee! I'm so glad you managed to work it out anyways!
DeleteI love your boot cuffs I just wanted to let you know I featured you on the Block Party tonight
ReplyDeleteThese are great! I think I will whip some up for friends as Christmas gifts. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThese are perfect for fall! And I love the scalloped edge. Linking up at Tangled Happy tomorrow. Thanks for sharing these!
ReplyDeleteWaaaaaw, love it!
ReplyDeleteI learned to crochet when I was on bedrest this summer. I finally have some free time to make something again and I am getting the supplies to make these tomorrow! So cute and the directions are well written!

ReplyDeleteMade these last night, and soooo cute, but I think I did the scallops wrong and will do over though, I'm determined. Thanks for this pattern.
ReplyDeleteDon't stress too much! Scallops are really hard, I have yet to figure out how to get them to come out evenly.
DeleteI've had requests to make these but how do you go about knowing what size to make them for each individual?
ReplyDeleteHi Britney! The easiest way to do it is to chain your foundation chain in multiples of 3, and just chain however many you need to fit around that person's calf. I found that 48, 51 or 54 sc stitches seem to be the most versatile.
Deleteok, just reading the directions.... and looks like you should have a skip stitches in row 5 and up between the v stitches and you don't have that....
ReplyDeleteThank you Martha! I appreciate your pointing that out. I don't know what happened when I wrote this pattern originally, I think I must have not had coffee that morning! But I spent an hour re-writing it this morning so hopefully the instructions are much clearer now.
DeleteFor anyone who had any questions, the pattern was heavily edited for clarity on 12/5/2013. Hopefully that helps clear up some of the confusion!
ReplyDeleteDid you change this post at all? Because when I made my first cuff I could've sworn it said chain 30, and I had to chain 45. Which made me feel a little bit self conscious^-^. But now as I'm making my second cuff it says to chain 48 to 54. So now I feel better X) But yeah these boot cuffs are beautiful! Thanks for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteYes! I did, thank you Brooke. I edited it for clarity at the beginning of this month, you're not crazy!
DeleteOh sorry didn't see that comment before. Great pattern, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI just made these and I absolutely love them! Thanks so much for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever thought of making them and selling them... I'd be interested in buying them. I don't crochet and looked in the stores for these and of course i wasn't able to find them anywhere. Let me know if you decide to sell them as I said I would definitely be interested. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDo I need to turn after each row or continue going, like a spiral? I have been doing it spiral-style, and when I slip stitch then chain one, I'm adding stitches and width to the cuffs as I progress. Am I supposed to be turning before each row??
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to make this and I am a beginner. I am struggling. haha Even my circle isn't lining up so I thought I got it twisted but I tried it 3 times and still doesn't line up. And my row 6 is hideous. I have no clue what I am doing. I usually look up videos for stitches I don't know and I can do ok, but I'm having a hard time. Help!
ReplyDeleteCarly, I just finished my first cuff (turned out super cute) if you still need help I can walk you through the steps your having problems with!

DeleteThank you so much for this super duper pattern, I love it! They were so easy and I finished them in two nights whilst watching tv. My daughter will need them as she is travelling to the USA from Australia this week. Thank you again Jessica.
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern so much! I was wondering if I could have your permission to try selling these on my etsy shop?
ReplyDeleteHi! I just finished making a pair of these for myself (and LOVE them!), and have already had requests for them. Do I have your permission to sell them with credit to your pattern?

Hi! I love the look of these boot cuffs, and I was wondering if LionBrand Heartland Yarn would work for these, and if so would I have to change the hook size? I know Vannas Choice yarn is a little drapy, and I've never work with Heartland yan. So looking for the perfect boot cuffs to crochet with it. Thanks so much for the pattern.

ReplyDeleteYou asked about your scallops not working out right. They are are a repeat of 7 minus 1. But the rest is a repeat of 3. I used 42 (divisible by both 3 and 7)and decreased one stitch in the last sc row before the scallops. 48, works . 54 works if u increase one stitch in the last sc row.
