Good Monday morning everyone! This dress was actually designed by my daughter! She has been doing more and more of her own designing as I am teaching her how to sew. For the sketch of this dress she drew this picture:
According to her, this is what "A Disney princess would wear to go downtown." And thus, the Urban Princess dress was born! I'm sharing the full tutorial for sewing your own Urban Princess dress over at Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom today, and I thought I'd share some pictures of the finished product with you to inspire you to go check it out! Jamie's blog is amazing anyways, and anyone who wants to sew for children should add it to their "must follow" list!
To do the photo shoot for her new dress, we did what my daughter loves to do best when we go downtown. We went to her favorite place to eat, the super funky and urban Flying M Coffee Garage! There we picked out some "fancy treats."
We got coffee, and she got a pink smoothie, because "Princesses always have pink things to drink." Of course.
And Princesses always "sit very fancy" in chairs:
I hope you enjoyed the cute pictures, and I really hope you go check out the tutorial! This was an easy sewing project with a really satisfying and fun result. See you over at Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom!

So cute! My daughter has been asking for her own little sewing machine but she's turning 5 next month and I just don't know if she's old enough for that yet! I do let her choose fabrics and tell me what she wants for a specific outfit though. Your daughter did a fantastic job designing her urban princess dress!
ReplyDeleteThank you! My daughter is actually only four, and she was younger then that when I started teaching her. She still needs "help" sewing, especially reaching the pedals, but she does great! I have to say though, she is a very studious and careful kid, so sewing lends itself to her abilities naturally. If she were a different kid with a different temperament (say, my son!) I wouldn't let her start until she was older for sure!
DeleteThis girl knows her Pricesses! What a precious dress & model!!!
ReplyDeleteWHAT A DOLL! And she designed her own pretty princess dress? It's awesome. My 6 y-o sat next to me while I designed and sewed a skirt the other day because she wants to learn how to sew too. Thank Heavens for little girls!! :)

Adorable!!
ReplyDeleteOooh! My nieces would both LOVE this they are all about princesses.
ReplyDeleteThank you! My idea was to try and translate her drawing into something made with cotton, machine washable fabrics that she could actually play in comfortably. She loves it! Like I briefly mentioned in the post, she played in the mud and I just threw it in the wash and it was all good!
DeleteThis is seriously adorable! I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea! I wish I could sew! It's just not my craft, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this post because it reminds me of my 4 yr old little princess. They're so funny!

I love this dress! How fun that you were able to transform her image into reality :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute, and how neat that she designed it.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! My daughter does the designing on some of her dresses too. Isn't it great? Love it! Catherine (new follower)
ReplyDeleteOh this is so cute! My husband's family produces nothing but boys (8 out of 10 grandkids so far) so I'll be counting my lucky stars if I ever get a girl! I'll tuck this away for "someday":) I love that your daughter designed this herself (and modeled it like a boss)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend! Pop by and say hi sometime:)
