kids clothing refashion: winter to summer clothing makeover part 1, no sewing needed!

Kids winter to summer clothing refashion

It's getting warm with a capital W here in Idaho! As the season is changing so quickly here, both my kids need spring and summer clothes.  But their winter clothes still fit them! Nothing annoys me more then paying good money for clothes for my kids, and then not being able to use them until they don't fit!

All of the pieces of clothing above had something in common, something that made them the easiest refashion ever: they all have layered sleeves!

This was so easy I debated not even taking pictures! But I did, and here they are:

I was very careful to cut as close to the original seam as I could, without cutting any threads. This way the seam will not unravel on my daughter later on.

Then off came the sleeves!

My son had one onesie that I took the layered sleeves off of, but it was still a little too short, so I cut off the bottom snaps and gave it a funky curved hemline, but left the raw edge.

Now my kids have these:

A bunch of short sleeved clothing that actually fits them! And I don't have to spend money on new summer clothes quite yet (although with the rate the Dude is growing, I don't think that will last the whole summer). This is my favorite kind of clothing refashion; free, easy, and no-sew!

Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 of this series, where I show you how to change up some other cold weather pieces to make them last through the summer. And in the mean time, I would love it if you all would share how you keep your kids clothing lasting through seasonal changes!

  1. How thrifty. I've added legging to dresses that are too short and have become long shirts. I've also added lace to the bottoms of my 8 yr olds jeans to make them a tad longer. Great tips. Thanks for sharing.

  2. What a GREAT idea!!! Now only if my boys clothes looked so nice to be able to use them again!
