Thrifty Tip Tuesday: Thrift Store Magic!

Just the other day, Jessica and I were laughing about how few posts we have about thrift stores since they are an important part of saving money!

I had two job interviews this week and needed a business suit.  I LOVE the whole blazer look and figured that I could wear it with dress pants to be professional and with jeans to be casual.

Gorgeous!!!!  And under $25!  Click on the link to check it out:

I hunted at all my usual stores, Target, Kohl's, Ross and couldn't find anything I loved.  On a whim, I stopped at a thrift store on my way home and BOOM!

I found an amazing black blazer ($6.99) and beautiful black dress pants ($5.99).  The best part is when I got to the front and the blazer was half off!  $3.50 for a blazer?  Awesome!

Here's the final outfit and a few of Hilary's thrifty tips for thrift store shopping:

$9.50 Business Suit... :)

I have a tough time finding modern clothing at thrift stores (Jessica would totally disagree, she finds TONS of cute clothes at thrift stores).  Often the shirts are a little faded, or have shrunk and are too short (a problem with my long torso).  I live in tank tops as undershirts and rarely find ones I like at thrift stores, so I buy them at places like Target or Kohl's.

So what do I buy at thrift stores?  I try to find things like dress pants since most people don't wear them all the time (or they outgrow them) and they are often in really good shape.

Don't be deterred if the pants aren't quite right.  Taking in pants or tailoring them to be more modern is SUPER easy (I'll be doing a tutorial soon).  The dress pants are a little more wide-leg than I like, but fit beautifully in the waist and butt, so its worth it to simply taking in the legs a little bit.  I could find the perfect pair of pants, but if I'm only paying $6 for a pair of pants, I can definitely justify adjusting them.

Sweaters are the same way.  People don't wear sweaters year-round, so they are in good shape.

Jeans are often worn, but that's acceptable.  Who doesn't love a good pair of already broken-in jeans?  The denim is hearty enough to wear for a while.  And if the style isn't your thing, you can always tailor them into skinny jeans or dye them.

What's your favorite thrift store find?
